About Neva Schmelzer, APRN, FNP-C

Neva Schmelzer MSN, RN, FNP-C, CVNP-BC, graduated with honors earning a bachelor of science in nursing from Ohio State University and her masters of science in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. She is board certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in Family Practice and by the American Board of Cardiology as a Cardiovascular Nurse Practitioner.

Neva has a passion for heart disease prevention and management and comes to Cardiovascular Specialists of Texas with more than 26 years of cardiology experience. She has established several innovative programs focused on the delivery of quality holistic cardiac care. In 2003, she coordinated and expanded the St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center Cardiac Rehabilitation program and was awarded the 2003 Clinical Excellence Award. She won The HCA First Humanitarian Award in 2010 for community volunteer activities, including leading a medical mission to Mexico as Vice President for Kids to Kids Mission of Hope and chairing the Public Awareness Committee for the American Heart Association Mission Lifeline.

“I believe that I enter into a sacred partnership with each patient I meet. Mutual respect and collaboration are critical to providing excellent healthcare which my nursing education taught me to value and work toward.” In order to establish this type of rapport, she places patient and family education and compassionate communication at the center of all her care.

Neva strives to practice individualized and up- to- date clinical care by staying abreast of the most recent research and using advance cholesterol and genetic testing when appropriate. Another cornerstone of her care is her belief in the power of the body’s innate ability to heal itself. “I prescribe and advise on individual diet plans, exercise prescriptions, sleep quality and stress management. Making healthy lifestyle changes are just as important as taking medications in cardiac disease prevention and management.”

“I felt drawn to the nursing profession from a very young age. The best part is getting to know and help people from all walks of life. I love the intellectual challenge as well. There’s always something new to learn.”

Neva grew up in central Ohio. She and her husband moved to the Austin area in 1994, where they have raised their two daughters. Her interests include traveling to our national parks and art museums with her family, gardening, and reading.
